Very interesting research by Sheila Nirenberg on prosthetic eyes and how they can replace the functions of some of the retina in order to produce the code that the brain perceives as visual data.
At a recent presentation at TED in October 2011 she describes the process and points out how understanding the code that the brain uses to receive data could be used to treat Blindness, deafness and other sensory disorders.
